Danmak (단막 강남역점) (How to go, what to expect)

I wasn’t the biggest fan of intestines until I tried fried ones a few years back, and now I’m obsessed.

There are many ways to cook intestines, and I came across this place that has a patented cooking method, which really piqued my interest.

Danmak uses a specialized 450-degree clay pot oven called Danji Hwadok, which gives the meat a really unique flavor and texture. Their makchang (big intestines) highlight Daegu-style flavor.

Currently, as of writing, there are already five branches of Danmak in Seoul.

You can look for other branches of Danmak by writing this 단막 on Naver Maps!

We went to the branch in Gangnam since that area is the closest one to where we were staying. Mom and I took the bus to get here since it involved the least walking. If you’re coming by subway, here’s how you can get here.

1. Get down at Gangnam station (line 2, Shinbundang line)

2. Get out of exit 11

Sharing our experience from riding the bus, we had to walk up an uphill street. I think you’ll also have to walk uphill if you’re coming by subway.

you should be able to spot the signage on your right

their famous clay pot oven!

I was able to see what it looks like inside, but nothing was being cooked at the moment. So I took some screenshots from Instagram so you could see!

The place was fully packed when we arrived, but we were lucky because a table had just been cleared, so we didn’t have to wait long to sit down.

they have a plastic pouch where you can put your clothes to protect them from the smell
self-service apron, for those who want to wear one

Ordering is through the tablet on the table! No need to worry about language since there’s an English version.

got the pork makchang, beef makchang, as well as pork neck

The portions looked small, but we were so stuffed after eating. The staff cooked the food for us.

all photos were taken using an iPhone 13 Pro Max / Fujifilm X-T20 18-55 mm

I liked how the makchang tasted, though I was hoping for a bit more fat. Still, if I’m craving intestines and there’s a Danmak branch nearby, I wouldn’t hesitate to eat here. The food was honestly great!!

If you also like intestines, you should definitely add this to your list. It’s a great chance to try something that tastes different from the usual.
