Renting from SK Car Rental (SK렌터카) – do I really need a car in Jeju? (What to expect)

I told my dad we needed to rent a car in Jeju since the island is huge (and that’s why we got an international license before our trip).

I’ve seen people get around without renting a car, but I don’t want that. I’m leading my parents, so I have to make sure we don’t get lost or struggle on the island.

So before the trip, I had a vision—hear me out! Good weather and driving around the island in a convertible. So, I went on a hunt for one.

I planned to rent elsewhere, but it worked out since they charged a higher price anyway!

There are lots of car rental options, but I wanted one that was foreigner-friendly and had a convertible available and that’s how I ended up with SK car rental.

How to book a rental via SK Car rental –
* note : do NOT book via Agoda for car rentals, I saw a couple have problems since they booked with Agoda and the rental company did not see their booking yikes

Go to their website (https://homepage-mob.skcarrental.com/en), there is an English option, and make an account!

you just need to enter the date and time you plan to rent and return the car

saw the convertible!
got the full CDW because you never know what can happen!

you can pay using your international credit card
Choose Credit/Debit Card – this is the one where you can use your international credit card
you’ll get this confirmation after you pay
you’ll also see this on your profile
confirmation will also be sent to your email

We took a taxi to the car rental on pickup day, but the company offers a shuttle bus service from the airport to the rental location.

Timetable for anyone who needs!

you should go to this area as soon as you arrive

there are a lot of english words around the area which was very convenient!

this is how we paid for gas when we had to gas up

I got so giddy the moment the Mini was spotted—it was in my favorite color, green!

We took some time because it was our first time driving a Mini, and we needed to get familiar with everything about the car.

Once we settled in, we followed the pink lines on the floor!

they gave us free water and some jellies!

It was our first time using CarPlay, so we got help from their staff—shoutout to the team for their insane patience with us, LOL!

used Naver Maps the whole time!

My dad drove on the first day, and I started driving on the second day!

Naver Maps will also tell you about the speed limit of some places

I honestly had the best time driving!
unfortunately we saw this message towards the end of day 2
and the red warning about the brake did not go away during the whole night
So, we had to go back to the car rental to switch cars. We got a blue one, which made me a bit sad—but I was glad I got to drive the green one for a few days.
returning the car was fuss free, all we did was bring the car back and pay for the km that we used

all photos were taken using an iPhone 13 Pro Max / Fujifilm X-T20 18-55 mm

After our experience, I’d definitely encourage renting a car in Jeju to explore the island. But you really need to be comfortable with driving, or it’ll be a big adjustment. Sometimes, we had to street park, so if parking isn’t your thing, it could be challenging.

There will also be some adjustments with Naver Maps in drive mode, so don’t worry if you make a mistake—it will just re-route you.

I had so much fun driving around Jeju with the hood and windows down—I definitely don’t regret renting a convertible. Next time, though, I’d probably go for a bigger one since the Mini’s back seats were a bit tricky for my parents to get in and out of.
